Mr. Benoît Guay graduated
from l’Université Laval, Québec City, Canada, in Computing Science,
Management specialization. After working
two years for the Education Department of Quebec Government, he joined DMR in
1975, for 27 years.
At the beginning of his
consulting career, Mr. Guay worked as Technology Consultant, System Delivery Consultant
and Project Manager. After this period,
Mr. Guay was successively Operation Manager, Human Resource Manager and Sales
& Marketing Manager for DMR Québec City Office.
Since 1990, Mr. Guay has
focused on methodologies, business processes and Knowledge Management. Mr. Guay, as Infrastructure Manager,
introduced the EPSS (Electronic Performance Support System) concept within DMR
methodologies. As soon as 1994, Mr. Guay
looked at Intranet/Internet technologies to support Knowledge Management.
For the last five years with
DMR, Mr. Guay has been Vice President in charge of the worldwide Competency Center for Knowledge Management
Services. He has been active in the
three main DMR regions, Europe, Asia and North America. For example, he participated, as Canadian
expert, in a study for the European Commission.
This study made recommendations to the Commission on building KRN
(Knowledge Reuse Network) for SME’s (Small
and Medium size Enterprises) in the manufacturing sector.
Mr. Guay is now president of
CI Conseil which provides consulting services in the field of Intellectual Capital
and knowledge management. These services aim at reusing the enterprise
intellectual capital and fostering innovation and creativity. Mr. Guay personally participates in strategic
consulting mandates.
Mr. Guay is recognized world
wide as a KM expert. His reputation
allowed him to talk in front of many internal conferences including the US
Treasury Department Private Council, in Washington DC. He has also been referenced in many European
publications. The list of these conferences
and publications is presented below.

Intellectual Capital and Knowledge Management
Experience

and implementation support of DMR methodologies, to DMR clients in Canada.
(1990 – 1992)
DMR
Consulting, (Montreal, Canada). Mr. Guay led the DMR
Macroscope project team responsible for providing the platform required for
sharing DMR practice knowledge. Introduced
the task support approach (EPSS: Electronic
Performance Support System) within
DMR methodologies. He introduced WEB
technologies within the Macroscope methodologies. The budget was more than $ 8M.
(1992 – 1998)
DMR
Consulting, (Montreal, Canada). As Vice-President, he led DMR’s worldwide Competency Center for Knowledge Management

Clients: Boeing and
Microsoft (Seattle, Washington). Mr. Guay managed multiple
joint experimentation projects on Knowledge Management approaches and
techniques to support Boeing business processes, airplane options and parts
management, and flight operation requests from airlines. The goal for the option (more than 1 500
options) and parts (more than 15 000 parts) management project was to
reduce the total number of parts which were different from one airplane model
to another (B757, B747, B767, and so on).
The main goal for the flight operation project was to integrate legacy
applications – many hundreds of systems - through the use of a neutral
information model. This project demonstrated the feasibility of this approach
which eliminated the need for building bridges for each pair of applications. Microsoft provided web-based technologies, some
of them not yet available on the market at that time, to demonstrate how these
KM approaches could be supported by Internet tools, in the future. He worked with engineering teams, sales teams,
operational teams, IT teams and education teams during these projects. (1995 –
1998)
Client: Ericsson, (Montreal, Canada). Mr. Guay managed an
experimental project with Ericsson’s R&D Department to develop the
conceptual model of Knowledge used by the R&D department. (1995)
Client: Finsiel, (Rome, Italy). He supervised projects to
pilot the introduction of the task support approach to support Finsiel sales
team. This project was followed by
projects executed with Finsiel’s partners such as Consiel, Sogei and Ministero Della Finanze. (1998 – 2000)
Client: Fujitsu, (Tokyo, Japan). Mr. Guay supervised
projects to experiment and develop a task support system to support Fujitsu
engineers involved in client projects. Introduced the EPSS concept and helped
develop the system. (1998 – 2000)
Client: Defense Research
Establishment Valcartier, (Québec City, Canada). Mr. Guay supervised
projects to add a KM environment on top of DND’s
Document Management System environment. Mr. Guay acted as facilitator for
strategic meetings aiming at adjusting the research center mission in term of
knowledge and information management. He
also introduced the task support approach. (1999-2002)
Client: AT&T Wireless
Services, (Seattle, Washington). He introduced KM concepts
and DMR KM approaches within the AT&T team responsible to manage AT&T’s
expertise. He also facilitated the DMR
KM Awareness seminar. (2000)

Canada). Mr. Guay supervised the development of SAAQ KM
strategy, including the adoption of the task support approach. He also supervised the development of the
task support system to support claim agents. (2000-2002)
Client: European Commission, (Brussels, Belgium). He participated in the study to make recommendations
to the Commission on building KRN (Knowledge Reuse Network)
for SME’s (Small
and Medium
size Enterprises) in the
manufacturing sector. He introduced the
results of Canadian experiences in this field of activity. (1998 – 2000)
Client: Transport Canada, (Ottawa, Canada). Mr. Guay supervised the
experimentation of DMR KM approaches for helping the Department to transfer
knowledge owned by baby-boomers coming to retirement age to younger employees.
(2000 – 2001)
Client: Wolters-Kluwer, (Brussels, Belgium). He supervised the team
developing Wolters-Kluwer KM strategy and task support pilot system to support
Web publishing (16 000 employees). (2001)
Client: Immunex (Seattle, Washington). Mr. Guay developed the KM
Strategy and KM roadmap for the next two years, for Immunex, a key player in
the biomedical industry. He identified short
and long-term KM initiatives to allow researchers to share their findings and
to reuse enterprise knowledge. This action plan also addressed the improvement
of the FDA approval process for new drugs and molecules. (2001)
CI Conseil inc.
Client: Bombardier
Transportation (St-Bruno, Canada; Berlin, Germany). Mr. Guay surveyed current practices
across Bombardier Transportation and established BT’s current position in terms
of knowledge transfer and knowledge sharing. Mr. Guay recommended to top
